Godly Remembrance

TEXT: PSALMS 119:49–56

Key verse:     “I remembered thy judgments of old, O Lord; and have comforted myself” (Psalm 119:52).

That our God is the God of Justice is stating the obvious. That He has said vengeance belongs to Him is to soothe our pains in the midst of unjust intimidation and persecution from the wicked and to assure us that the wicked shall not go unpunished.

In our passage today, the Psalmist spoke of the afflictions and horror he had suffered in the hands of the wicked. He was persecuted beyond measure, but he was comforted in one thing – the righteous judgment of the Almighty God.

From the creation of the world, wicked men had always persecuted the righteous; the Holy Bible is replete with the cruel activities of the wicked over the righteous. Although the wicked appear to be having a field day, they will not continue indefinitely.

The Bible tells us that “many sorrows shall be to the wicked, but he that trusteth in the Lord, mercy shall compass him about” (Psalm 32:10). However, we are told and comforted in the fact that the godly life is not complete without persecution. “Yea, all that will live godly in Christ Jesus shall suffer persecution” (2 Timothy 3:12). In the midst of persecution, the Psalmist urges believers in Christ to remember the righteous judgment of God.

Today, as children of God and pilgrims in the land of the living, what do we remember? Do we remember the ability of God to deliver? Do we remember the power of God to save to the uttermost? Do we remember the righteous judgment of God? Do we remember that vengeance belongs to God? It is indeed in remembering all these that we shall, like Paul the Apostle, term all the activities of the wicked against us as a “light affliction.”

We must not remember evil things but goodly and godly things that will ensure our triumph over all our adversaries.

THOUGHT FOR THE DAY :     Relax, all the activities of the wicked have an expiry date.
