Two Evils
Text: Ezekiel 20:10-26
Key verse: “Notwithstanding the children rebelled against me: they walked not in my statutes, neither kept my judgments to do them, which if a man do, he shall even live in them; they polluted my sabbaths: then I said, I would pour out my fury upon them, to accomplish my anger against them in the wilderness” (Ezekiel 20:21).
The children of Israel had a special relationship with God because of His covenant with Abraham. He clearly spelt out the basic condition for continued favor from Him and victory over all their enemies in the covenant He made directly with them through Moses their leader. “Now therefore, if ye will obey my voice indeed, and keep my covenant, then ye shall be a peculiar treasure unto me above all people: for all the earth is mine (Exodus 19:5). Although all the people promised to hearken unto God and obey His words, it was a short-lived obedience. Their repeated disobedience led to rebellion and brought the divine wrath upon them.
Speaking through Jeremiah, the prophet, the Lord told them: “For my people have committed two evils; they have forsaken me the fountain of living waters, and hewed them out cisterns, broken cisterns, that can hold no water” (Jeremiah 2: 13). The children of Israel decided to forsake the Lord and they went into idolatry. Repeated disobedience leads to rebellion.
God is love. He delights in the prosperity of His people. But if you as a believer goes into self-management and turns your ears from the truth, the grace of God cannot continue in your life. You need to retrace your steps like the prodigal son and quickly come back to the Father who has been patiently waiting to receive you back to the fold. However, if you continue in your downward journey and your heart is hardened, that rebellion can lead you to eternal perdition. Escape for your life today.
THOUGHT FOR THE DAY: Disobedience and rebellion will lead to eternal doom.
