Reverence God
Text: PSALM 116:1-9
KEY VERSE: “I love the Lord, because he hath heard my voice and my supplications” (Psalm 116:1).
In a moment of frustrating inconvenience, many a man is known to have clung to anything that can be of help. That is why it is said that a drowning man desperately grasps anything that appears helpful including the rootless water hyacinths! It is also a known fact that most people are apt to forget their source of help as soon as they embrace the rope of freedom. Illustrating the benefits of giving gratitude to God, an author of a book, wrote: “What changes do you suppose were in store for the leper who said thanks for Jesus healing? What about the other nine? They, too, had been healed but would they ever experience complete wholeness if they failed to express their gratitude to the Lord?
The Psalmist, according to our passage, went down memory lane, recounting all that the Lord did for him. In fact, he began the chapter by testifying and verbalising his love for God “because he hath heard my voice and my supplications.” Rather than ascribe his success, victory, deliverance and protection to his great wisdom and abilities, the Psalmist understood he could not have achieved anything except by the power of the Most High God, hence, his decision to praise the Lord.
Our passage today poses a great challenge to us all. Many people, including believers, often fail to acknowledge the finger of God in their lives. They, instead, revel in self-adulation thereby taking the glory that is actually God’s.
Today, God wants us to make a change of heart; he wants us to wear the humble spirit that we manifested when we acknowledged His free salvation to us. Likewise, every gift that comes to us must be seen to have truly come from God. Self-glorification can only amount to sin, the penalty of which is eternal death in hell
THOUGHT FOR THE DAY: Praise is a comely fragrance which evokes God’s blessings.
